Kerala wildlife

Kerala, one of the popular tourist destinations is not just about backwaters and hill stations. Its location along the Western Ghats and the dense tropical rain forests makes this South Indian beauty extremely rich in wildlife. There are many wildlife sanctuaries and national parks which are home to an array of exotic birds and animals.
Most Popular and visited National Parks of Kerala:

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary: Located 55 kms from Coimbatore, this wildlife sanctuary is famous for the Great Indian Tigers. You can also spot various other species of animals like elephants, lion-tailed macaques, Great Indian Hornbill, Nilgiri Laughing Trush and many more. Elephant rides and Jeep safaris are the activities offered within the sanctuary.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary: Located along the banks of the Vembanad Lake, this sanctuary is a haven for birdwatchers. You can spot many species of native as well as migratory birds like Siberian Cranes, egrets, flycatchers, water ducks and herons. Really this bird sanctuary is a paradise for ornithologists and bird lovers.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary:  It is situated in the Idduki district of Kerala. It is a natural habitat for many species rare animals and birds. Elephants, gaurs, sambar and leopards are some of the fierce animals that can be spotted here. It is also very well known for preserving endangered species like grizzled giant squirrel and star tortoise. You can opt for jungle safaris to explore the rich wildlife of the sanctuary. 
Silent Valley National Park: One of the most wonderful national parks of Kerala, this park is famous for excellent abode of hundreds of species of butterflies and over 400 species of moths. Here too, jungle safaris are offered to the visitors.

Eravikulam National Park: This national park has a vast expanse of lush green flora. The main purpose to establish this national park was to preserve highly endangered species of Nilgiri Tahrs. Other animals that you can spot while touring this national park are tigers, leopards, Malabar civets, elephants, barking deer, langurs and pythons.
